A modern twist to 80’s Miami
Hey world, it’s Steph, your little Birmingham wedding photographer.
Wow, what a crazy time we're all living in at the moment! I am not going to waffle on about it, I think we're all exhausted by it all! I send you all love and best wishes.
Let's cheer you all up with an amazing shoot I created back in 2020 in Birmingham!
This quieter time of year in the wedding industry means we get to be creative and really help inspire all of you engaged folk with your wedding plans! As you all know, I LOVE everything 80's, the music, films, fashion, art.... EVERYTHING!!! As I type this blog, I currently have my fave film on, BEETLEJUICE! Of course the best film ever was released the year I was born!
Anyway. I wanted to create a shoot to inspire couples who want to incorporate a theme, but in a creative and stylish way!
I love the colourful, garish and out there style of the 80's, but seeing it in a wedding today could be a bit extreme for most. This shoot will show you how we've captured 80's Miami vibes, with a modern twist!
I got in touch with an amazing team of suppliers who all captured the brief amazingly! Honestly, when I saw it all come together, I totally wanted to do a jump air punch moment you see at the end of 99% of 80's films! Let me introduce you to some of the most creative suppliers in this industry!
My fave dress makers were first on my list. Jen at My Little Wedding Shop is not only one the most beautiful souls you’ll meet, but she’s also so talented! She creates the most gorgeous bespoke wedding gowns. Whatever your vision, she works her bums off to make sure your dress is perfect! For the shoot, I pictured a clean, contemporary, sleek wedding dress. The dress was bringing the modern twist to the shoot, and boy did she bring it!!!
A modern dress, needs modern hair and makeup! Ellis, from Hair By Ellis is one of the best hair stylists I have met in the industry. The things she can do with hair are mind blowing! We wanted two looks, an elegant Miami wave and super sleep pony! Ellis paired the pony with the most gorgeous hair accessories, who doesn't love sparkly moons and stars?!?
Omie from Makeup by Omie Megan is one of the most wonderful women I know. She is so positive and such a calming influence on your wedding day! For the make up we wanted to channel the runway trend of dewy skin and pair it with the 80's pastels palette we were working to. Omie created such gorgeous, subtle looks!
Gabby from The Two Hummingbirds created such an elegant table for the shoot. I was amazed at her knowledge of textures and colours that really captured the 80's Miami. Keeping the tones natural, with accents of white and blush really kept the overall vibe contemporary with a subtle nod to the 80's.
Jenni from Handmade Design Company created the most amazing eco friendly, acrylic table seating plan and place cards for the shoot. Jenni's work is so amazing, her calligraphy skills are soooooo amazing! She created the concept of diamond shapes and the mix of pastel and gold, I mean, it's there stuff of dreams! Jenni has so many ideas, she will create the perfect signage for any wedding!
Caroline from Flowerology Birmingham created the most beautiful flower arrangements I have seen! The aim of the bouquet was to be fun and really capture the 80's! Using the pastels and keeping the bouquet loose really speaks to fun, modern brides! The table flowers really tied in the concept. Adding that little extra pop of colour really lifts the table styling!
Becky from Daisy and Fred is a cake queeeeeeen! Her cakes not only taste amazing, but look so bloody cool! Becky loves colour, so I knew this was going to be so fun for her! The 80's geometric shapes and colour palette is my dream in reality! Her marbled cake pops make the perfect favour for your guests! Creating this effect in your wedding styling colour palette will look beautiful on the place settings!
Zoe from Punks and Chancers supplied the amazing YES BAB jacket! How frigging cool are these beauts?!? Zoe is such a beautiful person and this shows in her amazing business! She is always supporting local Birmingham businesses and charities. So brides, I think you all need a Yes Bab jacket for your wedding day!
I used a real couple in the shoot. I used to work with Charles and we used to have so much fun on our shifts together! So when he started sharing his love on instagram, I knew I had to photograph them. Niobe and Charles are such a gorgeous couple inside and out. The shoot was the first time I met Niobe and I can honestly say, I've made a friend for life! (and of course Charles, but he already knew that!) Their so natural with each other and when you see the connection they have, it makes you just want to squish them! You'll be seeing a lot more of this couple for sure!!!
Scott from Scott Shellis Films tagged along to create some awesome, fun video content. Scott is my recommended videographer on my ultimate wedding package. We get on like a house on fire, which is great when we have to spend up to 12 hours working together! He has such a relaxed approach to capturing your day, this is why we work together so bloomin' well!
This Birmingham wedding shoot was a thing of dreams. We used an awesome Birmingham industrial setting to help create the modern twist to the vibe. Who doesn't love exposed brick walls and pastels!!! I really wanted to show what you can achieve in Birmingham. Digbeth is the perfect spot for an industrial, cool and relaxed wedding for all you bad ass couples out there!
